uncharted 4

Some surprising news out of Sony today: Naughty Dog has given Uncharted 4 its third and, hopefully final, delay, moving the release date two weeks back to May 10. According to Sony, the developer is delaying the game to ensure a smooth worldwide release. From the Playstation Blog:

“As you know, Naughty Dog is wrapping up production on Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End with the game on track to go gold and into production later this month. In an effort to meet the considerable worldwide demand, and to ensure that all gamers worldwide have the opportunity to play the game on day one, we have chosen to postpone the launch of the game by two weeks to allow for extra manufacturing time.”

It’s no secret that Uncharted 4 has seen something of a troubled development, with some notable leadership shakeups and two previous delays. To take the positive spin on this: Naughty Dog has one of the best recent track records of any company in gaming. Sony isn’t taking any chances with one of the most valuable names in the industry, and they’re making sure to give the developer the time it needs. That’s what Sony’s Shawn Layden is saying, at the very least:

“We know this news might be disappointing, and we are sorry to have to make you wait a little longer to play Naughty Dog’s latest. The good news is that the game is phenomenal — we are fully confident that it will be worth the wait and the team at Naughty Dog is eager as ever for you to experience Nathan Drake’s final adventure.”

It might also be because things are a totally mess, but I’m remaining cautiously optimistic on this one. Naughty Dog hasn’t let me down yet, and I like what I saw in the story trailer. We’ll be able to get a closer look at things  things weekend, when Sony holds an open beta to stress test the multiplayer servers and players all over the world get to see how the thing plays.
