The Pixel 4a comes soon before Google will announce the Pixel 5, and a 5G variant of the Pixel 4a. The cut-price google phone (about $350) offers a bunch of storage, ample RAM, and solid Google Pixel-fied software with updates directly from Google.
The Pixel 4a also contains many of our favorite Pixel features that make Android 10 a little bit better. Those include conveniences like Call Screen, which can fend off robocalls and telemarketers without forcing you to pick up your phone just to be duped. Google’s excellent Recorder app is here too — it transcribes voice to text in real time, and it’s also really, good at it. Recorder can now export transcriptions to Google Docs, for even more seamless note taking.
Pixel 4a is very much an attempt to boil down a smartphone to only the essentials and then make them all work really well. It has great camera, screen, performance and battery life, in a small and light body.
The body is high-quality, soft-touch polycarbonate and has a 5.8in FHD+ OLED screen that looks great: it is bright, crisp enough and has reasonably slim bezels all the way around.
The selfie camera pokes through a hole in the top left corner of the screen, taking up some of the space of the status bar and the display does not have the 90Hz refresh rate but it does have HDR certification for watching movies.
The back of the device has a traditional fingerprint scanner that just works, and does so in all apps. The Pixel 4a has a 4.5% bigger screen than its predecessor but its body is 5.8% smaller overall. At only 144mm in length, 69.4mm in width, 8.8mm in thickness and weighing 143g, the Pixel 4a is one of the smallest phones you can buy in 2020.
